You hit play on “Still Young” by Tiana Green and you hear something familiar. A warm voice à la Taylor Swift, and more precisely, her vocal prowess in “Welcome To New York.” While initially the two timbres may seem on the casual spectrum of singing, sustaining those pitches for the entirety of the song is rather difficult, as the voice register is right in the mix voice, between the chest and the head voice. But that is exactly where the strength and magic of Pop artists reside: in creating catchy tunes that most of us can attempt mimicking but which usually, most of us can only sustain throughout the verses—those high-pitched hooks are a vocal menace to anyone who’s not professionally trained.

B.R.E: Where are you from?
Tiana: I was born and raised in Cedar City, UT, also known as Festival City, US! I’ve been surrounded by festivals, music, Shakespeare, drama, and the performing arts my entire life in this spunky little town.
B.R.E: Why Pop music? It’s a genre that has seen a lot of ups and downs throughout the decades.
Tiana: I have explored a lot of different genres trying to figure out what exactly resonates with me the most. I have written a couple country songs, a little bit of pop rock, musical theater pieces, and a few rap choruses just for fun. However, through my exploration, I’ve found that pop music seems to be the most natural for me to write. It’s the universal language of music and my dream is to be able to speak to as many people’s hearts as possible. Pursuing music is more than a dream of mine. It’s a mission. A mission to touch people and evoke the intricacies of emotion in life that is so relatable to all of us.
B.R.E: What moment in your life marked your decision to be a music artist?
Tiana: I have been taking voice lessons since I was five years old and have always been drawn to the stage, whether it be dance, theater, singing, etc. However, when I was 14 years old I received a guitar for Christmas and just one month later, I had taught myself how to play chords and started writing songs!
B.R.E: How do you go about writing your songs? What is the creative and production process like?
Tiana: The writing process always seems to come to me by something I call a “wisp” in the air. It’s either a melody, lyrics, or a chord progression I find that I like and it ignites a spark inside my head that just screams at me to stop everything I’m doing and to start writing! From there, it all sort of comes at once, filling in the holes where it’s needed, rearranging itself until all of the sudden I’ve played it all the way through without stopping and it seems complete. The time it takes to write a song ranges from 30 minutes to a couple years to finish a song. I started writing the song “Still Young” my freshman year of highschool for my best friend’s older sister who was graduating. Since she left though, I couldn’t find the right way to express my feelings to complete this song until I was a graduating senior myself and all of the emotions were raw and happening to me in real life, evoking real emotions.

B.R.E: What’s your favorite movie of all time and how did it impact you as a musician and human being?
Tiana: I absolutely adore the movie “La La Land” featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. It’s a cinematic gem that beautifully captures the struggles encountered by creatives in a very artistic way. The fight for the dream, how desperate distractions can get in the way of what it is you really want to achieve, and how people come into your life for very specific reasons that change your life in meaningful ways. It’s absolutely beautiful, and inspires me every day. It also has tap dancing in “A Lovely Night” and that’s a hidden talent of mine. 😉
