Shaun L. Murphy Interview, The Hip Hop Motivational Speaker Successfully Mixing Two Industries

My children’s belief in my transformation is the ultimate validation.

B.R.E: What place in this world can claim rights to your roots?
Mister Motivation:
I proudly represent the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, with roots tracing back to the scenic landscapes of Barbados. Over the past 12 years, I’ve called the Lancaster, PA area home, embracing its rich culture and community spirit.

B.R.E: How did the journey into the music industry start? For how long have you been on this path?
Mister Motivation: My journey into the realm of music began about three years ago, with a deep dive into the world of music production taking root over the past year and a half. It’s a journey that traces back to my time at S.U.N.Y. Binghamton, where I spent two transformative years before embarking on a different path. Fast forward over a decade, and I found myself in a surprising twist of fate – teaching college courses on success strategies despite once dropping out myself. It was in this role that I realized the profound impact I could have on individuals, but I aspired for a broader, global reach. The answer came to me in the form of music. Inspired by artists like Adam Won’t Lose, who spoke over beats, I saw the potential to blend motivational messaging with music. With the support of a talented producer friend, Keith Jones, I embarked on an ambitious project: my debut album, The Audio Collection. Starting with a spoken word approach, the evolution into a full-fledged musician has been both exhilarating and fulfilling. My aim? To impact over a billion lives, instilling confidence and inspiring individuals to reach their fullest potential. But beyond the grand vision lies a deeply personal motivation – to show my children the power of determination and effort. They witnessed my journey from a place of no musical experience to envisioning a future where they could ask, ‘Ok Google, play Mister Motivation’ and see their father performing on stage, touching hearts and igniting inspiration. Their belief in my transformation is the ultimate validation.

B.R.E: You are doing something different: combining motivational messages with Hip Hop and Rap music. Why this genre and why choosing to inspire? Who or what instigated this desire in you?
Mister Motivation: I’ve always been drawn to the power of speaking to a crowd and found inspiration from the likes of Tony Robbins, Les Brown, ET, and Jeremy Anderson. But deep down, I resonate more with the energy of artists like Jay-Z and DMX. I wanted to merge these worlds – delivering powerful messages in a speech format while infusing elements of spoken word and original music. The positive music I create serves as a vessel to help people believe in themselves and embrace their potential. Combining motivational messages with hip-hop and rap music was inspired by the profound impact of music on the human spirit. As Louis Farrakhan once said, “one good song is better than a thousand of my speeches.” This revelation underscores the unparalleled power of music to inspire, uplift, and transform lives. By infusing motivational messages into hip-hop and rap, I aim to reach audiences in a way that resonates deeply and ignites positive change.

I’ve been recognized by Michelle Obama for my work with Military Veterans at Teach For America, and successfully led a Census operation during a challenging time of Covid.

B.R.E: What is your most treasured memory as a music artist?
Mister Motivation: My most cherished memory as a music artist takes me back to the humble beginnings of my journey. I vividly recall rehearsing ‘My Temple’ and ‘WHY’ in a basement space with my creative director, Jazz White. I stumbled through the lyrics, feeling the weight of inexperience. Fast forward three years, and I find myself on stages, delivering captivating 20 to 30-minute sets. The contrast between those early struggles and the present moment fills me with profound gratitude and a sense of accomplishment.

B.R.E: What do you consider your biggest accomplishment in life as a human being?
Mister Motivation: My journey on this earth has been filled with remarkable moments and achievements – from earning my master’s degree in education to serving 8 years on active duty. I’ve been recognized by Michelle Obama for my work with Military Veterans at Teach For America, and successfully led a Census operation during a challenging time of Covid. While these are significant accomplishments in their own right, I believe my greatest achievement is becoming a father and actively participating in my children’s lives. The privilege of shaping two individuals who will contribute positively to society is an unparalleled honor.

B.R.E: How do you choose the instrumentals you write lyrics to?
Mister Motivation: I choose instrumentals that resonate deeply with the emotions and messages I want to convey. Each beat evokes a unique energy, inspiring me to craft lyrics that align with the mood and theme of the music. It’s about finding the perfect harmony between the instrumental and the message I aim to share, creating a powerful synergy that connects with listeners on a profound level.

B.R.E: One lesson you’d like people to take away from your music?
Mister Motivation: I want my listeners to understand the transformative power of resilience. Embrace failure as a stepping stone to growth, and seek out discomfort as the catalyst for personal development. Above all, believe in yourself with unwavering confidence, and embrace the journey of the Victory Cycle: from failure to growth to ultimate triumph!

B.R.E: Any special shout-outs?
