Our business today however is brutally debunking 7 popular TikTok myths regarding the behemoth social media platform that obliterated the likes of Instagram and Facebook into obscurity. Warning: you aren’t ready for most of these 😀
Myth #7: TikTok is just for dancing teenagers.
No. If you see barely legal semi-dressed girls gyrating and flirting with the camera, it’s not TikTok. It’s YOU. Because that’s how TikTok works. The algorithm picks up on what type of videos you search, spend time watching and rewatching, and the age of the content creators you are most interested in. So yes. If you only see barely dressed girls dancing on your feed… You’ve been watching some very wrong videos prior to it.
Myth #6: TikTok is just for young people.
Repeatedly proven wrong. It’s for all ages and as a matter of fact, the number of adult users has quintupled in the last year alone. To put it into numbers, we have 22% of those aged 30-49, 14% of 50–64-year-olds, and 4% of those aged 65+. That is a whopping 40% of the billion users TikTok celebrated officially in September 2021. Do you know how much is 40% out of 1,000,000,000? FOUR HUNDRED MILLION. 400,000,000.
Myth #5: The TikTok folks have the shortest attention span.
False. They just need a lot less time to decide if they want to keep watching something or not. Studies have shown we all collectively now process information a lot faster. Real-life proof: do you read all ads you see in one day to realize you’re not interested in them? No. Your brain has developed, after 2 decades of social media an automated system of filtering out advertisements thus you don’t even register the information in them. And equally, when something matches your interests, you immediately want more of it. So if people are not tuning into your material, you haven’t met the right audience yet or your content is boring.
Myth #4: It’s not for all industries.
Hum… You know DuoLingo? The language-learning website and mobile app? Yeah, they got their own TikTok and it has grown a cult-like following due to their insanely creative and fun videos. How about The Empire State Building? RyanAir? Lionsgate? Those are some that we can name off the cuff but there are millions of small businesses getting customers daily thanks to TikTok and creativity.
Myth #3: You have to have the best gear to do videos.
No. TikTok won over a billion users BECAUSE they’re not Instagram. If you’re a makeup artist, sure. You need good lights and a decent camera. If you’re doing anything that does not require the utmost attention to the details on your face, you’re safe using whatever you got available. Some of the muddiest, blurriest videos have made it on the Recommended page.
Myth #2: You can’t make money on TikTok.
Wrong. Besides the native TikTok generated incentives like stickers and gifts, you can literally add your shop link once you hit 1000 followers and every time someone visits your profile, they have the option to click that link. Now whether you succeed in making your visitors WANT to buy what you sell, is up to your creativity and marketing tactics.
Myth #1: It’s too late to join it.
Never too late to join TikTok. At least not as of 2022. We built 5 accounts up to 1k followers each selling different products and talking about different things just to test out the validity of the algorithm. They all work. Now we’re building several musicians’ TikTok profiles and they’re about to hit that 1k mark this month and they only started 2 months ago. It was slightly easier when there were less users because of lower competition but we promise you, your creative efforts will be rewarded should you join TikTok today.
