Although apparently dedicated to the feeling of love, Church becomes a powerful statement with every play, every time becoming more of a warning than just innocent vulnerability. Sill manages to carry the audience into an ethereal state of emotions while handing over his raw vocals over the hypnotic beat: “And I can be your church/ I just need to wrap myself around you/ Wanna keep you safe inside my arms/ So let these wings of mine surround you”
Church starts off with a comforting, straightforward love: “I can be your shelter/ When it rains/ I can be the place that you go to/ Escape the pain”. Then it slips into the strongest type of love that threatens to engulf both people into one soul, “I can be your friend/ I can be your family/ I can always be here/ Even when you’re mad at me/ I can be your love/ I can be your faith/ I can be your soulmate/ Your saving grace”. When one person can be all you ever needed, it is the most dangerous and beautiful relationship at the same time. And Sill shows that when he loves, he gives his all, maybe even too much at times.
The beat is minimalistic and the voice cadence – modern and unadorned. Both indicators emphasizing the seriousness of the song’s message: I can love you as much as people find the church the absolute liberator of human sins, “I can be your now/ I can be your someday/ I can be your weekend/ I can be your Sunday”.
If I was to name a similar vibe, I’d say think of Solange’s Cranes In The Sky, same air of mystique, same consuming love that borders toxicity, same high-art sonority, almost like when music stops being just a sound and becomes a complex painting veiled in emotions: “I can be your dreams/ Your state of mind/ I can be your emotion/ I can make you mine/ I can be your passion/ I can be your job/ I can be your angel/ I can be your God”.
As in all of his masterpieces, Sill depicts vivid moments with his words and dynamic. If you enjoy dark pop, or the likes of The Weeknd, this song is for you.
