DJ Snake’s You Are My High samples The Gap Band’s You Are My High. It is most interesting seeing how DJ Snake is changing, shifting, and evolving his sound over the years. From Turn Down For What to this EDM-infused, deep House rooted, TikTok-melancholic vibe. And for the lack of a music video, the song is highly popular competing with much more famous monikers on the market and winning.
Despite it being a musical soup (a whole lot of independent sequences that sound off and far from each other all meshed together), You Are My High was written by 4 people: Charlie Wilson, Johnsye Andrea Smith, Ronnie Wilson, and DJ Snake. The record managed to chart in France and the US.
9. Meet Me At Our Spot by WILLOW, THE ANXIETY, and Tyler Cole
Released in 2020, this is yet another sleeper hit that blew up thanks to the one and only, truly yours, mind-blowingly popular, TikTok. Meet Me At Our Spot entered various charts since its virality on TikTok, reaching No. 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Willow’s highest-charting entry since Whip My Hair in 2010. It reached number 17 in the UK. Jada Pinkett Smith must be proud given that many forgot the actress was into Rock music herself in the early 2000s.
Fun fact: there is a studio version of the song that just doesn’t click with the public. Everyone is trashing it while publicly affirming their adoration for the live version.
8. edamame by bbno$ and Rich Brian
The guy’s name is read as Baby No Money. Okay cool kid. The Canadian-Armenian rapper paired up with Rich Brian (we see what you did there), to create edamame which is the name of a bean, which makes sense given the album is called eat ya veggies. Seems bbno$ has a knack for wordplay and meanings. And yes, the beans imply balls. Dear Lord.
Rich Brian, the collaborator, formerly known as Rich Chigga, is an Indonesian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is known for his viral debut single Dat $tick, which was first released in March 2016 on SoundCloud. The single was later certified gold by RIAA.
7. Get Into It by Doja Cat
Get Into It is from Doja’s 3rd studio album Planet Her. The song embraces Doja Cat’s alternative, fun, squeaky side with her voice cracking and squealing throughout the entire record. You never heard anything like it. We promise you that much.
Get Into It blew up thanks to TikTok, being a megatrend with hundreds of thousands of videos. The 150 million streams pushed the record to chart in 12 countries and got certified in Australia and New Zealand. Initially, it was supposed to be a feature track with Nicki Minaj but the legend said she couldn’t really add anything to the track to make it better. Now that’s a boss move.
6. Heat Waves by Glass Animals
Released in June 2020, Heat Waves is the English group’s most successful single to date and was a number-one hit in Australia, in addition to being a top-five hit in several European countries, and reaching the Top 15 in America. Bayley, the lead singer stated that Heat Waves is “about loss and longing, and ultimately realizing you are unable to save something.”
Of course, big daddy TikTok boosted the track back onto the charts a year later due to it becoming a trend. Heat Waves re-entered at number 18 in September 2021 and continued into the top 5. The viral video also helped the song climb back up 31 places to number 14 on the Irish Singles Chart in its 41st week on the chart. On Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US, the song reached the 20th position in its 36th week and 15 in its 34th week.
5. She Knows by J. Cole
Released on October 29, 2013, as the 4th single from his second studio album, Born Sinner, She Knows charted back in 2014 on US Billboard Hot 100, US Hot R&B Songs, and US Rhythmic Billboard. Guess what? After becoming a TikTok trend, the song entered the charts again in 2021 charting in Lithuania and UK. The power of TikTok. SMH.
The record narrates J. Cole’s, excuse us for using this expression, dawg ways. On a more serious note, he also pays tribute to legends like Aaliyah, Left Eye, and Michael Jackson, which we always appreciate.
4. Somebody’s Watching Me by Rockwell
Recorded by Rockwell and released by Motown in 1984, Somebody’s Watching Me features guest vocals by brothers Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson. At the time of its release, Somebody’s Watching Me became a major commercial success internationally, topping the charts in Belgium, France, and Spain, reaching the Top 5 in Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.
Gen Z just discovered the single thanks to TikTok and catapulted it back onto the charts in 2021 on Global Billboard 200.
3. Mama Said by Lukas Graham
Mama Said is the sleeper hit by Lukas Graham – a leading Danish recording act first known for his incredibly successful 7 years single. Mama Said was initially released for digital download on June 23rd 2014 under Copenhagen Records. Although the Pop record achieved success and recognition in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, it did not chart majorly until it became a trend on TikTok starting August 2021.
Mama Said was written by Stefan Forrest, Lukas Forchhammer, Morten Ristorp, Morten Pilegaard, and is based on the sample from the Annie song It’s the Hard Knock Life.
2. MONEY by LISA
The Thai singer, rapper, and famous member of Blackpink, LISA, released MONEY on September 10th via YG Entertainment and Interscope Records. The song comes from the artist’s solo debut project named Lalisa. The performance video surpassed 100 million views on YouTube within 2 weeks of its release. The song also rose to number 5 on the Spotify Global Chart and became the fastest by a K-pop soloist to surpass 100 million streams on Spotify, doing so in only 37 days.
Unlike the rest of the songs on this list that become mixed, mashed, and sometimes unrecognizable before they mean something to the TikTok community, MONEY is gaining major momentum on the platform via professional and amateur dancers alike who are reproducing the choreography shown in the performance video by Lisa and her dance mates.
1. Let’s Groove by Earth, Wind & Fire
From their 1981-released studio album Raise!, Let’s Groove came onto the scene as a game-changer given that Disco music was facing a severe backlash at the time. Earth, Wind & Fire left their mark in the music industry history seeing commercial success via the genre that everyone was consciously leaving behind.
The single charted time and time again peaking at number three in the US and in the UK the year of its release. It also spent eight weeks at number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart in late 1981 and early 1982 and was the second R&B song of 1982 on the year-end charts. Then it charted again in 1995, 1996, then it scored chart position in France both in 2012 and 2013.
