You know those times when you feel singled out, as if life had a personal problem with you, and you just can’t seem to catch break? It’s the taste of hitting rock bottom emotionally. What’s Wrong With Me by Ben Jordan and Callum Butterworth, is a most accurate audio depiction of what each of us goes through in life sooner or later: dark times. The beauty of this song is making you realize, by detailing the mental anguish, that in our solitude we’re all more alike than we think.
“I’m down and out I’ve lost myself/ I’m cold inside and I need some help/ What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with me?” – opens Callum Butterworth, the collaborating artist, after Ben’s efortless guitar intro. Right off the bat you hear the incredible power in their voices. These young men are delivering raw vocals without a hint of reluctance. They know they’re good at what they’re doing and they’re going in. You get a front view of Callum’s vocal control at 0:26 when he holds that note impressively stable and goes on to sing “I don’t know what to do I can’t express myself/ For some reason I just feel like I’m someone else/ What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with me?”
At 0:40 Ben Jordan marks his charming entrance with the following lyrics: “No one seems to care how I’m feeling inside/ I wouldn’t know the answer even if I tried/ What’s wrong with me? oh, what’s wrong with me?” a very authentic description of one’s inner thoughts when going through emotional pain, when you feel disconnected from everyone else and they don’t seem to notice your struggle. Ben’s voice is slightly higher-pitched than Callum’s and yet, complements the entire song structure, giving it a warm tonality.
Their voices truly come together at 01:04 when they both sing: “People always say that things will get better/ maybe this time I’m not just under the weather/ Look up to the sky and wish for brighter days/ Hoping that somebody’s love’s heading my way” – and you can hear the two voices distinctly but you easily process them simultaneously. It’s one of those rare moments “so different yet so alike”.
At 01:41 Ben is giving us an exceptional electric guitar solo. It’s always fascinating to me when a musician can play more than one instrument. From What’s Wrong With Me alone, we are deeply impressed by the many talents of this young upcoming artist: he can play the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar, he can sing, he can write, he can compose. Ben Jordan is the full package, a prolific musician.
The record then follows with the 2nd verse, and joint pre-chorus and chorus, with some notable lyrics: “I guess you never know if you don’t even try”, “I can’t be the only one that’s ever felt this low/ Even if you lay things out that’s not the way they go” – with the last part indicating the ultimate closure humanity has with itself, in proving that hard times are easier to overcome when knowing you’re not the first one to go through it.
