Voices is all about finding that certain comfort in knowing that you’re not alone in your darkest hour and that many, many before you have been through it as well. Acoustically, Voices is built on two different creative impulses, the Rap bars and unfiltered quality of JDiggs Tha Prodigy, and the heartfelt, melodic R&B voice of Marka.
Touching a material yet barely discussed truth, Marka dives all in with a mythical power in his range: I hear voices in my head and they won’t stop until I’m dead/ Maybe next time I cock back, I might just fire/ I chase danger for the thrills/ Just to feel something that’s real/ Is it wrong to want to know that I’m alive? Cold shivers and imagination exercised to the darkest depths of the human mind. This is raw, scary, and reassuring for those who are in this abyss of questioning life and one’s purpose.
Marka implements considerable amounts of R&B vocalizations and the bass missing from the post-production process is discernible. Someone knew what he was doing and transitioned the singer’s voice from the usual studio take to a radio-ready vocal hook. The yell-singing approach is an eccentric feature of Voices that is unleashed the most in the second part of the chorus.
The next bit was unexpected and shocking to say the least. F*ck/ Man/ I don’t know what to do/ Sh*t/ Let me think/ Let me pray, cries the Rap artist. We haven’t noted vulnerability like this since… NEVER? Crying is usually employed by mainstream acts as a gimmick and method of gaining sympathy when sh*t hits the fan in their marketing and PR department. Jdiggs Tha Prodigy, on the other hand, has nothing to win and everything to lose as an independent artist when exposing his emotional side to this extent to all those that know the man and follow him. This is how we know it’s real.
The rap verse commences with a steady voice laid on a rapidly increasing flow paired with a myriad of supporting back vocals. The latter confer an additional dimension to the pain and suffering: Heavenly Father/ I don’t wanna bother you but life is causing so many problems/ Waking up is driving me insane I’m downing so many bottles/ I wanna be healed but all in my mind I’m screaming don’t even bother. Despite the manifold pressures to conform to a certain production style as a modern Hip Hop artist like singular leading tracks and minimal backing, Jdiggs Tha Prodigy sticks by his guns and loyally delivers old-school flavored songs. Voices follows the blueprint but it comes with a new assertive attitude, that of the musician being so confident as to share from his emotional self with the world.
Don’t even bother with your conversations/ How you gon’ doctor on my spirit when I’m losing patience?/ Man this prescription that I’m given I can’t even mess with/ ‘Cause now the hardest pill to swallow is my own reflection, resourcefully raps the artist. Why resourcefully? Because he keep finding new angles and anchor points in his narrative of being at the limit without becoming a bore. Jdiggs Tha Prodigy has officially leveled up in 2022.
The devil is callin’/ All of my demons surrounding my body I don’t wanna battle my conscience/ So many people tell me that I matter I’m not really hearing that nonsense/ All of the voices keep talkin’/ All of the voices keep talkin’, Jdiggs we know this is a song but these lyrics hit too hard. On a somber note, the rapper’s ability to paint heavy imagery with words and the consistent sprinkling of his music with à la ’90s acoustics grant Jdiggs Tha Prodigy the ultimate X factor on the music market. There’s not many, if any, that sound like the man of the hour.
Speaking of imagery, the second part of verse 2 and the ending sequence feels like a psychological thriller and for Google compliance reasons, we can’t quote them. But do hear them out at your discretion and try not to gasp too loud because you just might.
Voices sees linguistic and sentimental innovations from Jdiggs Tha Prodigy while abiding by the well-known old-school hue of the artist that he’s become known for. He wrestles the darkest of themes into a coherent shape of Hip Hop art.
